The quantitative literacy level as a proxy indicator of human capital has become one of most important topics in economic history that came to the fore recently. This article attempts to estimate the level of quantitative literacy in the early nineteenth century Ottoman society relying on the population censuses that were held during the 1830s. In addition, relying on the extracted/compiled data from the Ottoman census, this study tries to find out the possible determinants of the quantitative literacy level of the Ottoman individuals. Striking outcomes came out in this study. First of all, the level of literacy in Christian community was higher than the Muslims, while the Jewish literacy was slightly beneath the Muslim’s level. Secondly, the logistic regression analysis showed that the people engaged in agriculture and/or farming were more likely to be literate compared to those who were engaged in trade or craftsmanship.
