Use of Children's Books About Grief as a Therapeutic Tool: A Content Analysis

Öz

The aim of this study was to examine the contents of children's books about grief. Among the purposive sampling methods, criterion sampling was used while specifying children’s books. Accordingly, 10 children’s books that meet the criteria of (1) having content about grief, (2) having been written from the hero’s perspective, and (3) targeting children between the ages of 5 and 11 were selected. Content analysis was performed with the MAXQDA program. All codes were grouped under three main themes: components related to the adaptation process, components related to grief reactions, and components related to loss. As a result of the analysis, it was noted that the expressions in the books are mostly coded with cognitive reactions (n = 47). Emotional responses (n = 30) and social support (n = 17) were the other most frequent codes that were used in the analysis. In addition, the examination of the drawings commonly reflected feelings of sadness and social support. As a result, it is thought that children’s books implicating the grief process can be used as a therapeutic tool, especially in young age groups in making sense of death and increasing emotional awareness.

Terapötik Bir Araç Olarak Yas ile İlgili Çocuk Kitapları: Bir İçerik Analizi

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı yas ile ilgili çocuk kitaplarının içeriklerini incelemektir. Çocuk kitapları belirlenirken amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden ölçüt örnekleme kullanılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda; (1) içeriğin yas ile ilgili olması, (2) kahraman bakış açısıyla yazılmış olması ve (3) 5-11 yaş arasına uygun olması ölçütlerini karşılayan 10 çocuk kitabı seçilmiştir. MAXQDA programı kullanılarak içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Tüm kodlar uyum süreciyle ilgili bileşenler, yas tepkileriyle ilgili bileşenler ve kayıpla ilgili bileşenler olmak üzere üç ana tema altında toplanmıştır. Yapılan analiz sonucunda kitaplardaki ifadelerin en çok bilişsel tepkiler (n = 47) koduyla kodlandığı görülmektedir. Duygusal tepkiler (n = 30) ve sosyal destek (n = 17) en sık kullanılan diğer kodlardır. Ayrıca kitaplardaki çizimler incelendiğinde ise üzüntü duygusunu ve sosyal desteği yansıtan çizimlerin kitaplarda daha çok yer aldığı görülmektedir. Sonuç olarak yas sürecini ele alan çocuk kitaplarının özellikle küçük yaş gruplarında ölümü anlamlandırma ve duygusal farkındalık gibi konularda ruh sağlığı uzmanları tarafından terapötik bir araç olarak kullanılabileceği düşünülmektedir.
