A Situation Analysis of the Design, Construction Characteristics and Manufacturability of Ottoman Palace Furniture in the Western Influence

Öz

In this study, the design and aesthetic evaluations of Ottoman Palace furniture under the influence of the West, its material and construction properties and its manufacturability today, were examined by the academicians working in the relevant departments of the relevant universities in Ankara and Istanbul, the furniture and interior space working in the vocational and technical Anatolian high schools in these provinces. It is aimed to reveal the views of the teachers of the field of design and the employees at all levels in the furniture sector companies in these provinces. This research, in which quantitative and qualitative research methods were carried out together, was concluded with the "mixed research" technique. 726 people selected randomly from the relevant study group participated in the questionnaire developed within the scope of the quantitative research method, and the data of the results were evaluated with the SPSS program. In the qualitative research method, a total of 30 people, 10 from each profession, who volunteered to participate in the study in the same sample group and were determined to carry out more closely related works and transactions, participated in the study, and the results were analyzed by content analysis. According to the results of the study, the original Turkish furniture is not known in the world markets, it is necessary to explore its own values, to examine and evaluate its own culture more deeply for furniture design that has the identity characteristics of a certain culture, and that the furniture history courses in Universities and Vocational and Technical Anatolian High Schools are related to furniture design. It has been determined that it is seen as less adequate compared to the lessons, if furniture reflecting the traditional Ottoman / Turkish identity is put on the market, it will be in demand, and traditional Ottoman / Turkish furniture can be produced with today's technology. It has been seen that especially heavy carvings, inlays, marketry and turning techniques were applied, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory and brass ornaments were used in the Ottoman palace furniture under the influence of the West, and the style of the 19th century, patterns and floral motifs were used. The wooden parts of the furniture are generally made of mortise, dowel, and foreign chevrons, the covers are combined with mortise-frame-cover jointing, tablaruka or plywood is placed inside the cover frames, the covers are usually made of brass leaf hinges, some of the covers are manufactured as sliding covers, bonding wooden parts to each other. It has been determined that casein, gluten or blood glue is used as glue, and the upper surfaces of wooden works and furniture are polished with shellac lacquer. As a result, original designs can be developed by preparing designs that reflect our culture about Traditional Ottoman/Turkish furniture, opening design schools, and establishing R&D centers.
