The aim of this study is to examine the effect of inflation on income distribution in Turkey between the years 2003-2021 in terms of the lowest income group (Top 20%) and the highest income group (Last 20%). For this purpose, the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) were used and the inflation calculations between the poorest and the richest groups were made and interpreted by considering the inflation difference and the share of expenditure items in the consumption baskets. It has been determined that the poor group is exposed to the inflation rate at a higher level than the rich group. It has been concluded that the inflation gap between the mentioned two groups is increasing day by day. It is observed that expenditures such as food and non-alcoholic beverages, housing and rent put more and more pressure on the consumption basket of the poorest group in terms of expenditure items during the period under consideration. For the high-income group, it has been determined that the share of transportation expenses is gradually increasing. These evaluations show that it has a distorting effect on income distribution by widening the inflation gap between the poorest group and the richest group. In addition, it proves that it increases the difference in living standards between the richest and the poorest group. It is more important for income distribution justice to consider the inflation rate calculated according to income groups for policies.
